The Importance of Good Hydration - Ajit Patel Goldshield, Ajit Patel Wellness

Drinking enough water to keep your body sufficiently hydrated is one of the most simple but effective things that you can do for your health and wellbeing. No other nutrient is more essential or is needed in such large amounts and even slight dehydration can have a significant impact on your daily life. The effects of dehydration include poor concentration, tiredness, headaches, impaired sleep dry skin, joint problems and digestive disorders.
Water is one of the most important nutrients in your diet. It is essential for plump skin, delivery of nutrients to all your cells and for flushing away wastes. You normally maintain a fine fluid balance which is regulated partly by hormonal control and partly by the concentration of salts, sugars and soluble proteins in your circulation. As long as you replace your daily water losses through adequate drinking and eating, you will avoid dehydration and help to maintain plump, healthy skin, bright beautiful eyes, while avoiding dry, brittle hair and nails. For most people that means obtaining around 2 litres of fluid per day from drinks, plus eating moisture-rich foods such as soups, yoghurt, watermelon, cucumber and other juice fruit and vegetables.
Dehydration is a common cause of tiredness, poor concentration, reduced alertness, reduced short-term memory, headache and mood changes. It also increases the stickiness of blood, and reduces the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your cells. When you are dehydrated, your skin will lose its attractive glow, and give you a tired, haggard appearance with more pronounced sagging and dullness. Blood vessels in the thin skin beneath the eyes may become more visible, leading to dark circles. Unfortunately, your thirst receptors are not a sensitive judge of how fluid deficient you are, so you are already significantly dehydrated by the time you feel the need to drink. Urine colour is a useful way of checking your level of hydration. Aim for a pale, straw colour. If your urine is dark yellow and concentrated you should drink more fluids such as water or green tea. As caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, it is often claimed that caffeinated drinks, such as tea, can caused dehydration. Researchers have shown that drinking tea provides more than enough water to offset this diuretic effect, however.
