Andrew Graham, 41, thought he knew all about handling workplace pressure. But when he became Chief Executive of Graham & Brown wallpaper, his temper and aggressive management style were becoming a problem. He turned to Paul Bird for help and says Emotional Fitness has transformed the way he communicates.  “The approach has changed my style of management in a very positive way – and I’m constantly recommending it to other people,” says Andrew.  “I’ve always had a forceful personality but I would feel myself building up to what I called an ‘eruption’ and wouldn’t be able to stop. “What Paul was able to teach me was how to understand my own emotions, the stages I was going through, then suggest ways to intervene. He showed me how to distract myself and take a calmer approach. It’s like he holds up a mirror and you can see the reflection and make real choices. Other staff have benefited from it too. Rather than simply telling people what to do, it’s all about empowering people and helping them to be more fulfilled and productive in the workplace. The beauty of working with Paul is that he has a corporate background – he is aware that in the past alpha males and females in business weren’t keen to use what they saw as ‘touchy feely’ techniques. But thanks to people like him that is changing, we are all realising that business works better when we understand our behaviour.”
