Psychologists have found that over-confidence helps people gain higher social status, so they are treated with more respect, and have greater influence among their peers. As a result, those who believe they are better than others, even when they aren't, rise higher up the social and business ladders. Colleagues would benefit from taking an individuals' self-confidence with a grain of salt, and look for the evidence on which to judge someone's actual ability.
