Mother Nature gives a helping hand to Daddy - Ajit Patel Goldshield, Ajit Patel Wellbeing
As with many of the male species, the XY chromosome often means a display of testosterone to attract a mate. When the competition for said mate has been won and the bond completed, there still remains the issue (at least in the human equivalent) of the ‘mate’ being a lifelong partner.
It seems, however, that Mother Nature had a plan in place for helping a father bond with his new son or daughter and ultimately help become more family oriented.
The National Academy of Sciences followed 624 young men before and after the birth of their child. Testosterone levels dropped substantially after they became a father, with reduced levels remaining with more involved parenting.
Christopher Kuzawa, the lead investigator for the work carried out in the Philippines, said:
“Raising human offspring is such an effort that it is co-operative by necessity and our study shows that human fathers are biologically wired to help with the job. Fatherhood and the demands of having a newborn baby require many emotional, psychological and physical adjustments. Our study indicates that a man’s biology can change substantially to help meet those demands.”
The study also showed that prolonged lower testosterone levels seen in married men and fathers may lead to protection against certain chronic diseases. It means that there could be a biological difference that makes married men generally healthier than their single counterpart.
Or said in another way, the love of a good woman.
